What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Contact forms

When visitors submit a message via the contact form we collect the data shown on the form, and the visitor’s browser agent string. The browser agent string is collected only to give us a better idea of which browsers are used by visitors, while the response to “How did you find my website?” is collected only to give us a better idea of how visitors find the website. In the case of the Contact Me form, the other data is only used to reply to the message, with the name, country and message published on the Previous Messages page only if the tick box requesting this is not done is left empty, and the email address if provided only used to send one email with the reply. No data is passed by us to anyone else or used for marketing purposes.

Mailing lists

When visitors submit their email address on the mailing list subscription form, the only data we collect is said email address and the selection of mailing lists they wish to receive. The data is only used to send the requested mailing lists and emails confirming changes to their mailing list settings. Visitors need to confirm that they do want to receive the selected mailing lists in response to the initial email sent after the form is submitted, otherwise they will not receive any more. No data is passed by us to anyone else or used for marketing purposes.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Google Analytics is used so we can get an idea how visitors reach the website and what pages they look at (and for no other purpose). Cookie(s) are used to track visitors movements around the website for this. Data is not passed by us to anyone else. Google’s privacy policy can be found here: https://policies.google.com/privacy?hl=en-GB.

How long we retain your data

Data submitted using the contact forms (Contact Me and Feedback), including the browser agent string, may be retained indefinitely.

Email addresses submitted via the mailing list subscription form may be retained indefinitely.

Analytics data associated with user identifiers is retained for 26 months as of 25th May 2018 (i.e. any data from before that date will be retained until 26 months after it, data after that date will be retained simply for 26 months).

What rights you have over your data

If you have submitted messages via the Contact Me form or subscribed to mailing lists, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

The website is hosted by HostPapa, so mailing list subscriber data is stored in a database on their servers on our behalf, and if an email address is specified in the Contact Me form, a reply will be sent from an email account hosted by them. Read HostPapa's Privacy Policy.

Data submitted using the contact forms (Contact Me and Feedback), including the browser agent string, is processed by www.snaphost.com, and sent to the website owner's personal Google Gmail email account (read Google's Privacy Policy).
